Francisca Snoeck Henkemans
A. Francisca Snoeck Henkemans, Associate Professor in the Department of Speech Communication, Argumentation Theory and Rhetoric of the Faculty of Humanities (UvA), coordinates the Research Master Rhetoric, Argumentation Theory and Philosophy. In 1992, she defended her Phd thesis Analysing Complex Argumentation, in which she developed a dialogical model of how various argumentation structures may come intobeing in a discussion.
Snoeck Henkemans is a specialist in the field of linguistic characteristics of argumentation. In 2007 she published a monograph on argumentative indicators in discourse, together with Frans van Eemeren and Peter Houtlosser. At present her research focuses on the role of stylistic devices such as tropes and figures in arguers’ strategic manoeuverings, that is in their attempt to balance their dialectical with their rhetorical aims. Snoeck Henkemans is a member of the editorial board of one of the leading journals in the field, Informal Logic, and of the Dutch Journal of Speech Communication (Tijdschrift voor Taalbeheersing) and is a regular referee for the journal Argumentation.
