From May 1st 2010 I am the director of the African Studies Centre in Leiden. Please read my brief 'inaugural speech' (in English or in Dutch) at the occasion of Leo de Haan's farewell lecture, April 12. Leo was my predecessor. He became Rector of the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University (in The Hague). In January 2011 I delivered my inaugural address as Professor in the study of African Development, at Leiden University.
