Memory, Cult Practice and the Construction of Religious Identity.
In my research project, 'The Integration of Latin cults in Roman Religion: Memory, Cult Practice and the Construction of Religious Identity’, I will investigate the cults of Juno Sospita, Diana Nemorensis, Hercules Victor and Fortuna Primigenia. These deities had important archaic sanctuaries in Latium, but eventually received a cult in Rome as well. Contrary to the common approach, I will concentrate on history of the deities after the moment of incorporation, examining the discourses on the origin, character and developments of the cults during the Republican and (early) imperial period. The analysis intends to elucidate the interactions between the Roman and the Latin cult sites and the way perceptions of the deities were transmitted in literature, visual culture and ritual practise. By focusing on religious experience and the different kinds of – literary and material – sources that represent it, I will study the Latin character of the cults as something that was conceived, remembered and communicated. My dissertation aims at a thorough understanding of four cults in the religious landscape of Rome and Latium, but I also aspire to develop an innovative way of studying Roman perceptions of diversity and religious change.
