Background

Antoinette studied private and international law at the University of Amsterdam, following many courses in cultural anthropology, economics, Arabic, politics of the Middle East and philosophy of languages. Her LLM thesis concerned the Egyptian Investment Act. She worked in corporate law for a few years both as a lawyer and a senior policy advisor, but returned in April 2006 to the University of Amsterdam to work as a lecturer-researcher.

Research

Her research concerns the question which societal factors shape the labour relation of the domestic workers in Saudi Arabia and the Emirates, and what causes the relatively high occurence of conflicts. She has done fieldwork in Saudi, Dubai, Manila and Jakarta and works hard to finish the thesis spring 2011. 

Other activities

  • Treasurer of CSR Chicks, a network of women involved in Corporate Social Responsibility.
  • A course in cooperation with the ILO for the Omani Ministry of Labor on human trafficking and the necessity of access to justice.
  • Organizing a session on the necessity of female judges, lawyers and police women at a conference in Qatar on women & human rights.
  • Expert member of the workgroup on migrant workers, of the Arab European Human Rights Dialogue, studying the possibility of setting up legal aid offices in the Middle East.
  • Co-founder of the Amsterdam Circle for Gender & Law.
  • Organizing, with the help of a group of students, of a conference on the prevention of unsustainable debts.
  • Studying to learn better Arabic (Fusha).
