Beate Roessler is professor of ethics and its history at the University of Amsterdam; 2003-2010 she also taught as Socrates-Professor for the Foundations of Humanism at Leiden University. She formerly taught philosophy at the Free University, Berlin, Germany, and at the University of Bremen, Germany. She studied philosophy at Tuebingen, London, Oxford, and Berlin, completed her Ph.D. in 1988 at the Free University Berlin, and her Habilitation 2001 at the University of Bremen. In 2003/4 she was a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg) in Berlin. In November 2011 she was a fellow at the Macquarie University Research Centre for Agency, Value and Ethics, Sydney. She is a co-editor of the European Journal of Philosophy.
Since october 2006 she is programme director of the research program Philosophy and Public Affairs (Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis, ASCA).She is a founding member and member of the board of the Amsterdam Platform for Privacy Research (APPR) (http://www.appr.uva.nl/appr-en/main.cfm)
Her research fields include: justice and equality; human rights; theories of freedom and autonomy; theories of privacy;moral normativity; ethics andthe good life; feminist theories; her current research is concerned with theoretical and practical problems in autonomy.
She teaches courses in ethics and social philosophy; and a general course on Philosophy and Literature for students of the humanities.
