PhD-Supervision

The following PhD students are (co)supervised by prof. Tonkens:

 

Femmianne Bredewold
Femmianne Bredewold works at Gereformeerde Hogeschool, where she conducts her research called ‘Reciprocity between people with and without (physical, mental or psychiatric) disabilities’. By studying both spontaneous and organised forms of interaction between both groups at the local level in the city of Zwolle, the Netherlands, she seeks to understand the dynamics of reciprocity.


Judith Elshout
Judith Elshout  is a member of the AISSR (Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research) at the University of Amsterdam. In her  PhD-project ‘Self-Respect in a Meritocratizing society’, she attempts to answer thequestion whether people on the lowerrungs of the social ladder struggle with their self-respect due to (perceived) meritocratic values. Her research is conducted within the framework of the research program ‘Responsible, Engaged Citizens and Inviting, bridging Institutions’.


Dana Feringa
Dana Feringa, is PhD student at Fontys Hogeschool Eindhoven, where she writes her PhD-thesis on Youth participation.


Efecan Inceoglu
Efecan Inceoglu is a member of the AISSR (Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research) at the University of Amsterdam. Within the broader framework of ‘culturalization of citizenship’, by doing ethnographic fieldwork in both the Netherlands and Turkey, he compares Turks in the Netherlands with Kurds in Turkey with respect to issues such as belonging and autochthony.


Broer van der Hoek

Broer van der Hoek is affiliated with the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (hvA), where he conducts his research called ‘ Visions of citizenship formation in education’ (Burgerschapvorming in het onderwijs). His first supervisor is M. Volman.


Menno Hurenkamp

Menno Hurenkamp is a member of the AISSR (Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research) at the University of Amsterdam. His research deals with a specific type of communities, ‘ communities light’ (lichte gemeenschappen), on which he published many books and articles.


Huub Gulikers

Huub Gulikers works at the Hogeschool Arnhem Nijmegen, HAN, is writing his PhD on Accountability in social work (2007-2012).


Ellen Grootengoed

Ellen Grootegoed is a member of the AISSR (Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research) at the University of Amsterdam. She conducts her PhD research withinthe broader research project Learning to Participate. An Investigation into the WMO Programme.


Maaike Jongepier

Maaike Jongepier works at the Hogeschool TIO and conducts her research within the project ‘ Responsible, Engaged Citizens, and Inviting and Cohesive Institutions’. Her first supervisor is dr. Baukje Prins.


Thomas Kampen

Thomas Kampen is a member of the AISSR (Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research) and her research focuses on the interaction between welfare clients and their case managers, understanding the meaning of participation in the active welfare state and how welfare reform stirs certain emotions. His research is also a part of the broader project Learning to Participate. An Investigation into the WMO Programme.


Paul Mepschen

Paul Mepschen is a member of the AISSR (Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research ) at the the University of Amsterdam. Within ‘Citizenship, National Canons, and the Issue of Cultural Diversity. The Netherlands in International Perspective’, he focuses on the culturalization of citizenship and the construction of 'autochthony' in the Netherlands on the basis of his field-work in Amsterdam West.

 

Sabine Ootes

Sabine Ootes works at the Medical Ethics section at the Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC). Her research project is called ‘Unequal citizens. Citizenship for people with severe disabilites’  (Ongelijke burgers. Burgerschap voor mensen met ernstige psychiatrische beperkingen). She is also supervised by prof. dr. D.L. Willems en dr. A.J.Pols.


Rogier van Reekum

Rogier van Reekum is a member of the AISSR (Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research) at the University of Amsterdam. Within ‘Citizenship, National Canons, and the Issue of Cultural Diversity. The Netherlands in International Perspective’ he is conducting a study of the public and political debates on Dutchness and citizenship in the N http://home.medewerker.uva.nl/r.vanreekum/index.html etherlands (1989 - 2010).

 

Bregje Termeer

Bregje Termeer is a PhD candidate at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) at the University of Amsterdam. Within ‘Citizenship, National Canons, and the Issue of Cultural Diversity. The Netherlands in International Perspective’, her research investigates artistic production of Muslim migrants in the Netherlands and how this is related to culturalization of citizenship.

Mandy Ridderhof de Wilde

Mandy Ridderhof de Wilde is PhD-candidate at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) at the University of Amsterdam. Within the research program ‘ Responsible, involved citizens and inviting, connecting institutions’ , she analyses the role of emotions in the public domain through a focus on engaged residents in the neighbourhood renewal deal (Vogelaarwijkaanpak).
