Eric Jan Sluijter

Eric Jan Sluijter is professor (emeritus since 01-04-2011) in Renaissance and Early Modern Art. He is chair of the Amsterdam Centre for Study of the Dutch Golden Age (director Dr. Lia van Gemert). 

Eric Jan Sluijter studied art history at Leiden University, from which he also received his PhD. For several years he worked as research fellow at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie in The Hague . Between 1976 and 2002 he was assistant/associate professor at Leiden University. During this period he also taught as visiting professor at Yale University ( New Haven , CT ) and the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’. His appointment as professor at the University of Amsterdam (01-01-2002)  included a position as visiting professor at  the Institute ofFine Arts of New York University (one semester a year) during the years 2002-2007.

Sluijter has published widely on many aspects of Dutch painting and printmaking in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries: from 16th-century prints and 18th-century painted wall-hangings to the art of Rembrandt and Vermeer. From 1995 to 2000 he supervised the research programme Pictorial Tradition and Meaning in 16th and 17th-Century Painting and Printmaking, funded by NWO (Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research). From 2007 through 2011 he supervises the research programme on Artistic and Economic Competition in the Amsterdam Art Market, c. 1630-1690; History Painting in Rembrandt's Time. funded by NWO (co-supervisor Dr. M.J. Bok), and from 2010 through 2013 the programme The Cultural Industry of Amsterdam in the Golden Age (co-ordinator Dr. Harm Nijboer), funded by the KNAW. He co-supervises the programme Cultural Transmission and Artistic Exchange in the Low Countries, 1572-1672: Mobility of Artists, Works of Art and Artistic Knowledge (supervisor: Dr. Filip Vermeylen; co-supervisor Dr. Karolien de Clippel).
