Emiel Martens - Media Studies

Short Biography

Emiel Martens is Lecturer at the Department of Media Studies of the University of Amsterdam, where he is currently conducting a PhD research entitled 'Framing Island Paradise: A Critical Geography of Jamaica's Cine-Tourist Image'. He is also associated with the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, and finishing his Masters in International Development Studies.

In 2006 he has been working as a guest researcher at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) of the University of the West Indies at Mona, Kingston (Jamaica), where he also conducted his fieldwork for both his PhD and Masters. In2008, Martenslaunched the Caribbean Creativity Foundation ( www.caribbeancreativity.nl ) to support Caribbean film and filmmaking entrepreneurship.

Anotherresearch interest of Martens is the Pacific region and indigenous representation. In 2002 he went to New Zealand for a period of six months to conduct a research on the national controversy surrounding the indigenous Maori film Once Were Warriors (1994). In 2007 he published his first book resulting from that research (see below).
