Florien van Beinum was associated professor at the Institute of Phonetic Sciences of the University of Amsterdam until her retirement in July 2004. She studied Dutch Linguistics and Literature at the University of Amsterdam. In 1964 she graduated with specializations in phonetics and in General Linguistics. From 1965 onwards she worked as a staff member of the Institute of Phonetic Sciences of the University of Amsterdam, where she was appointed Associate Professor in 1986. In 1980 she defended (cum laude) her dissertation “Vowel Contrast Reduction. An Acoustic and Perceptual Study of Dutch Vowels in Various Speech Conditions”, being the first woman in The Netherlands graduating on an acoustic-phonetic subject. Her research and teaching, apart from general aspects of speech production and speech perception, concerned mainly subjects like spontaneous speech and speech of female versus male speakers. A second line of research that was started in 1979 concerns earlyspeech development and speech(developmental) pathology. She is involved in international research concerning deafness and early intervention by cochlear implants in relationship to early speech development. She was supervisor of a ten doctoral dissertations. As a guest lecturer she regularly gave courses at the University of Helsinki. For that university she participated in 1999 in the International Research Assessment Committee. Since 2004 she works as an associate guest researcher at the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication ACLC of the University of Amsterdam.

Florien van Beinum was tot juli 2004 universitair hoofddocent Fonetische Wetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Zij studeerde Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde. Na haar doctoraal examen, met als bijvakken Fonetiek en Algemene Taalwetenschap, was zij als staflid verbonden aan het Insituut voor Fonetische Wetenschappen van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. In 1980 promoveerde zij cum laude op "Vowel Contrast Reduction. An Acoustic and Perceptual Study of Dutch Vowels in Various Speech Conditions", de eerste vrouw in Nederland die op een akoestisch-fonetisch onderwerp promoveerde. In haar onderzoek en onderwijs heeft zij zich behalve met algemene aspecten van spraakproductie en spraakperceptie, vooral bezig gehouden met spontane spraak en met spraak van vrouwen versus die van mannen. De laatste jaren is haar aandacht meer en meer gericht geweest op vroege spraakontwikkeling en spraak(ontwikkelings)pathologie. Zij is nauw betrokken bij internationaal onderzoek op het gebied van doofheid en vroege interventievia cochleaire implantatie in relatie tot de spraakontwikkeling. Van een tiental promotie-onderzoeken was zij supervisor en copromotor. Als gastdocent heeft zij regelmatig colleges gegeven aan de universiteit van Helsinki. Voor deze universiteit heeftzij bovendien in 1999 deel uitgemaakt van de internationale Research Assessment Committee. Sinds juli 2004 is zij als gastonderzoeker gelieerd aan het Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication ACLC van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.
