Past
Frans Camphuijsen (1987) finished a Bachelor's degree (2009; cum laude) and a Research Master's degree (2011; cum laude) in History at the University of Amsterdam. With his Master thesis, entitled 'Public Speech and Societal Narratives of a Late Medieval Law Court: The Council of Utrecht, 1385-1425', he started research on the ways in which late medieval judicial authorities interacted with the societies they tried to control. To establish its own position as judicial authority, the Council of Utrecht was forced to convince society of its own legitimacy as legal institution by presenting narratives about society and its own role within it and communicating these to society by oral, textual, ritual and symbolic means.
Present
From september 2011 on Frans has been employed as both a teacher and PhD-student at the section of Medieval History at the University of Amsterdam . His PhD-thesis builds forth on the research done for his Master-thesis. It will present a comparative history of the communicative practices of late medieval law courts and the narratives they presented for and about society. Adding to the work done for Utrecht , the thesis will treat the archiepiscopal court of York and the parliament of Paris in their social and communicative contexts.
Teaching
As teacher Frans will at first concentrate on the education of first year students in the course 'Bronnen & Literatuur: Middeleeuwen en Renaissance'.
