Hein-Anton van der Heijden
Hein-Anton van der Heijden is a senior lecturer in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam and a member of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR).
Van der Heijden (1950) studied Dutch Language and Literature as well as Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. His political science MA-thesis was on direct democracy in the Italian city of Pavia. In the 1980s his research focused on public administration topics, resulting in his 1990 PhD-thesis on discourses on administrative reorganisation and physical planning in the Netherlands. In the 1990s his focus shifted to environmental discourses, environmental politics and environmental movements. He (co)authored books on new social movements in the Netherlands, the Green movements worldwide, environmental organizations and the European Union, and anti-nuclear movements. In 2000 his book 'Tussen Aanpassing en verzet' (on environmental movements and environmental discourses in first, second and third world countries) was published. His most recent (2010) book is 'Social Movements, Public Spheres and the European Politics of the Environment' (Palgrave Macmillan).
Van der Heijden is also a fiction writer ( www.heinantonvanderheijden.nl ). He published short stories in De Gids and De Tweede Ronde. In 2010 his novel 'De zomer van Godard' was published (Uitgeverij Aspekt).
