Jantina Huizenga is a PhD student at the Research Institute of Child Development and Education of the University of Amsterdam. Her research subject is gaming in secondary education. She completed a Bachelors degree in Social Work at the Horst University of Applied Sciences (now part of Utrecht University of Applied Sciences) in 2000 and a Bachelor and Masters degree in Education and Child Studies in 2006 at the University of Leiden. During her study and after graduation she worked at the same University and also for an organization called Technika 10 located in Amsterdam. She’s always been interested in the added value of ICT for education.

In April 2007 Jantina started working at the University of Amsterdam on her PhD project called “Digital Games and Game-based Learning in Secondary Education”. For this project she conducted research on the mobile game Frequency 1550. She's now in the final stage of a review of game-based learning literature. In Sepember she started research on Games Atelier, a new educational tool that teachers and pupils can use to play, share and view locative mobile games.

Jantina is currently busy trying to get an overview of which secondary schools in the Netherlands use which digital games. If you have more information on this, please contact her. She would like to interviews teachers about their use of digital games (playing or creating) in class. Currently 40 teachers are participating, mostly from economical and computer sciences, so especially teachers from other subjects, e.g. languages, are invited to respond.
