Welcome

Welcome to my personal homepage. I am an external PhD-student at the University of Amsterdam , studying the bilingual language development (Frisian/Dutch) of young children in the province of Fryslân (the Netherlands). This project is performed at the Fryske Akademy in Ljouwert/Leeuwarden.

Below you can find more information about my project. The other webpages will give an overview of my presentations and presentations so far and my curriculum vitae. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an e-mail.

PhD project: The bilingual language development of the young Frisian child

The aim of this project is to investigate the bilingual language acquisition (Frisian/Dutch) of children attending a preschool in the bilingual province of Fryslân/Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. Do both languages develop independently of each other or do children show cross-linguistic influence? This research will distinguish between children’s home language (Frisian or Dutch) and three different language contexts in which these children may grow up. These contexts are mainly Frisian, mainly Dutch and bilingual. The theoretical framework is founded on the interdependence principle or common underlying proficiency theory of Cummins stating there is a positive relationship between L1 and L2 with transfer of proficiency in L1 to L2 and vice versa (Cummins, 1981, 2000).

The Frisian and Dutch language development will be monitored at three different moments in a period of 1,5 to 2 years. Children will be monitored on passive and active vocabulary (test), auditive memory (test) and morpho syntax (audio-recording).

This project is financed by the provincial government of Fryslân: Provinsje Fryslân. It started in 2008 and is expected to finish in 2011.

Promotors are prof.dr. Folkert Kuiken and prof.dr. René Jorna (Fryske Akademy/RuG). Dr. Edwin Klinkenberg (Fryske Akademy) is co-promotor.
