Joost van Spanje's web page (EN)

Joost van Spanje is assistant professor of political communication and quantitative methods at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), University of Amsterdam (UvA). He teaches several Bachelor's and Master's seminars, co-supervises two PhD students, and is involved in several research projects.

Joost specializes in political behavior, electoral studies and political communication. He holds a PhD degree from the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence. Joost's PhD dissertation was "recommended for publication." No higher distinction is possible at the EUI. Inaddition, the thesis won the 2010 NKWP Dissertation Award as the best out of 52 political science PhD dissertations defended in 2009.

In 2006, Joost won an EUI scholarship and spent one semester at New York University (NYU) to follow courses and to work on his PhD dissertation. Before being selected for admission to the EUI's doctoral program, he obtained a 'doctoraal' (=Ba+Ma) degree in law (2001) and a doctoraal degree in political science (2004) from the UvA. During his studies, he worked as an assistant at the UvA (2001-2004) and for the Dutch national parliament (2000-2002).

Joost's research focuses on the quality of democracy in contemporary West European countries in general, and the following topics in particular:

 -   electoral campaigning in established democracies and its effects on party choice

 -   political responses to the presence of extremist political actors in established democracies

(e.g., co-opting policy positions, building government coalitions, cordons sanitaires)

 -   legal responses to the presence of extremist political actors in established democracies

(e.g., hate speech prosecution of politicians, monitoring parties, party bans)

This Spring Joost will present his work at the ICA Annual Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, and at the NKWP/PI Annual Meetings in Amsterdam.
