Dr. Jeroen Jansen
Dr. Jeroen Jansen is senior lecturer in the Department of Dutch Language and Literature in the University of Amsterdam. His specialisations include rhetoric and literary criticism, argumentation and style. He is internationally recognised researcher in the field of Renaissance literature. Dr. Jeroen Jansen is organiser of symposia on literature, literary criticism and rhetoric, co-supervisor of several dissertations, coordinator of the professional honours programme Neerlandistiek (Dutch Language and culture, Language and Communication), and chairman of the Program Committee Research Master Dutch literature. Dr. Jeroen Jansen has published in the field of Dutch and European literature, rhetoric, literary criticism and style. His major publications include Brevitas (1995), Decorum (2001) and Imitatio (2008). He is currently leading the project: Pretextual Strategies. Sinds 1988 doceert hij aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, eerst als onderzoeker, later als universitair docent bij de leerstoelgroep Historische Nederlandse letterkunde. Hij gaf gastcolleges in Berlijn, Metz, Parijs en Londen. In het verleden was hij bestuurslid van de Werkgroep Zeventiende eeuw en redactiesecretaris van het tijdschrift De zeventiende eeuw. Thans is hij bestuurslid van de International Society for the History of Rhetoric, afdeling Benelux, coördinator van het honoursprogramma Neerlandistiek, lid van de opleidingscommissie Nederlande taal en cultuur en voorzitter van de opleidingscommissie Researchmaster Nederlandse letterkunde.

Onderzoek
In zijn recente onderzoek naar en analyse van historische teksten probeert Jansen recente ontwikkelingen in de historische taalkunde en moderne taalbeheersing te integreren. Aandachtspunten zijn: - Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse letterkunde in de periode 1500-1700.
- Tekstanalyse, discourse analysis (tussen 1500-1700).
- Pragmatiek. Dialogisme en polyfonie. Proleptische argumentatie.
- Strategisch argumenteren in oudere teksten.
- De relatie tussen humanistische en Nederlandstalige literatuur, met speciale aandacht voor rhetorica, en poëtica.
- Waardering van de klassieke Oudheid in de renaissance.
- De relatie tussen Franse en Nederlandse letterkunde tussen 1550 en 1700.
- Poëticale opvattingen in de Nederlandse letterkunde, in internationaal perspectief.
- Pretextual Strategies. The Rhetoric of Ethos, Literary Authority and (Con)textual Identity in Renaissance Preliminary Texts. Dit onderzoek maakt deel uit van het onderzoek van de leerstoelgroepen Historische Nederlandse letterkunde en Moderne Nederlandse letterkunde van de UvA dat in de komende jaren gestroomlijnd wordt in het programma Writing, Culture and Identity; Social Dimensions of Literature in The Netherlands. Het richt zich op de functie van literatuur in politieke, wetenschappelijke, godsdienstige en artistieke context, op de strategieën die inliteratuur gehanteerd worden om de publieke opinie te beïnvloeden en op de rol van de verschillendeartistieke (literaire) milieus te midden van andere maatschappelijke kringen.

 Vondel
Vondels `Aenleidinge ter Nederduytsche dichtkunste' Een recent artikel is gewijd aan polyfonie en dialogismen in de `Aenleidinge ter Nederduytsche dichtkunste' (1650) van Joost van den Vondel. Summary The `Aenleidinge ter Nederduitsche dichtkunste’ of Joost van den Vondel is a prose introduction to a new edition of his Poëzy (1650), in which Vondel writes down advices for the way arriving poets can qualify themselves in poetry. These recommendations vary from basic conditions (having talent) up to a number of advices for advanced, talented poets (e.g. how to imitate). Studies from the seventies of the last century by S.F. Witstein, E.K. Grootes and L. Strengholt have emphasized the didactic character of the textand the fact that it is modelled to Horace’s Ars poetica. The structure of the `Aenleidinge’ is central to these analyses, all of which reached a different classification, anyway. My analysis aims at polyphony and dialogism, in particular at finding andconstructing dialogues. Certain elementsencourage such a way of reading. Theconditional subordinateclause, the use of modal adverbs, the negation, and the change between a `hij’ (he, the poet) and a `gij’ (you, a person addressed) indicate polyphony to which shreds of `single lessons’ resound. In all these cases dialogues can be (re)constructed. The analysis on underlying `voices’ allows infinite (general) interpretations, but can also indicate certain cases in a finite (concrete) way. Concerning this last point additional material can be found in the nature of the text and in the context. I consider the `Aenleidinge’ not particularly as a poetics in which Vondel displays his eruditionand tries to imitate or vie with Horace, but rather as the reproduction of cases from Vondel’s own practice in his confrontation with arriving poets, who let him read their work and asked him to comment on it. The `Aenleidinge’ then may have been for Vondel also a medium to slightly diminish the number of poets who came to his house for consultation. That his comment is impregnated of Horacian conceptions seems logic given the predominating position of this traditional authority in seventeenth-century poetics.
