Profile
I am a PhD candidate working on a thesis entitled Cine-aesthetics: A Critique (of The Critique) of Judgment after Bergson under the supervision of Prof Josef Früchtl and Prof Patricia Pisters. My research focuses on the development of the philosophy of art since Kant. In particular, I reconsider certain key but seemingly disconnected ideas in Kant’s aesthetics — for example the two senses of the term ‘aesthetics’ he employs as well as the ambiguous connection between art and nature in the third Critique — by looking at discoveries in the philosophies of art and biology in the wake of Bergson. To help illustrate and ground the more theoretical aspects of my thesis, I discuss examples from 'cinematic' art (contra film) as well as post-vitalistic strains of contemporary biology, particularly in the thought of Gilbert Simondon and Francisco Varela.
