Research project: Charters and Chancery of the Counts of Holland/Hainault, 1299-1345
This NWO-funded project is carried out by a PhD researcher at the University of Gent (Belgium) and one at the University of Amsterdam. The project started in 2006 en will be finished by 2010. Valeria Van Camp is examining the charters of Hainault while Jinna Smit is analysing the charters of Holland. By looking carefully at writing, text content and lay-out of the charters, we try to identify which persons were involved in their production. Consequently, we aspire to provide insight into the organisation of the administrative office(s) of the count, during a period in which the geographically dispersed counties of Holland and Hainaut were brought together into a personal union. Our supervisors and promotors are prof.dr.Th. de Hemptinne (UGent), prof.dr. P.C.M. Hoppenbrouwers (UvA) and dr.J.W.J. Burgers (UGent and UvA).
Biography
Born in 1974, I succesfully completed my studies in Medieval History at the University of Amsterdam (1997) and Archival Science and Management at the Archiefschool in The Hague (1999). After working at the Amsterdam City Archives and the National Archives in The Hague, I lived in Asia for four years during which I received a graduate diploma in English Literature from the National University of Singapore and ventured into Korean Language and Culture at Inje University in Gimhae (South Korea). After obtaining a Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, I taught Dutch and English in Singapore, China and South Korea. Upon returning to the Netherlands, I co-authored the following research guide for the National Archives: Michel R. Doortmont and Jinna Smit, Sources for the Mutual History of Ghana and the Netherlands (Brill 2007) (Conover-Porter Award recipient 2008). Currently I am working on fore mentioned research project at the University of Amsterdam.
I need your help!
Since my research project started, I have searched the Dutch archives (and the National Archives of the United Kingdom) for charters issued or received by the counts of Holland/Hainaut during the period 1299 until 1345. My research partner, Valeria Van Camp, did the same in Belgium (and in the Archives Nationales in France). By now, my corpus should be nearly complete. However, I am pretty sure I might have overlooked some charters. If so, please do not hesitate to notify me. Keep in mind though that the charters should meet the following requirements: they should (a) be originals, (b) issued or received by the count or his family members (c) during the period 1299-1345. When you click on the links below you will find the listings of the archives I have searched. Your help is greatly appreciated!
