Current position

Van Alberda holds a position as senior researcher in the fields of Mediterranean and European (esp. Medieval) Archaeology at the Amsterdam Archaeological Center (AAC). For Mediterranean archaeology he participated in the pottery project of Lione du Pied (Syria), the Sacred Landscape Project (SLP) of Tesse Stek and  the Satricum Project of Marijke Gnade (Italy).

Van Alberda has digitalized the Satricum temples with a view to a local exhibition and accompanying catalogue and is currently working on a digital representation of the grave-distribution of the South-West Necropolis.

For European archaeology van Alberda participated in the projects of Niers Kendel and Kootwijk (province of Gelderland) and as staff-member of the AAC excavation team he took part in the field campaigns of Anthony Heidinga at Oud-Wolfheze near Arnhem (province of Gelderland), initiating freshmen of the UvA into the ins and outs of archaeological fieldwork.

He has contributed to and written several annual reports concerning Oud-Wolfheze, is in charge of its find documentation, the mapping and digitalization of the research area (topography, trenches etc.) and is now working out the various aspects of the  project with a view to a final publication later in the year.

Previous projects

Prior to his assignment at the AAC van Alberda did field-work in Doesburg (the Netherlands), in Augusta Raurica (Switserland), and participated in several campaigns and survey projects of the Free University of Amsterdam (ACVU): in the Netherlands (Tiel-Passewaaij) and in Italy (Valesio, Muro Tenente, Ostuni).

At Muro Tenente (Mesagne) he was involved in excavation activities, off-site surveying, an investigation of a Hellenistic well, participation in a local exhibition concerning the excavation, a study of its Hellenistic roof-tiles  and of a so-called votive disc found on the site. He has published on the last two subjects and is preparing a final report on the roof-tiles, as well as an article on a similar but complete votive disc from Tarent (ancient Taras) in the collection of the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam. Van Alberda was also involved in the Regional Pathways to Complexity survey project (RPC) in the foothills around Ostuni.

Van Alberda is keenly interested in field-archaeology, ethnicity  and culturalinterrelations, religion and cult, and  in iconography.
