Manuel B. Aalbers
Manuel Aalbers, a human geographer, sociologist and urban planner, is an assistant professor at the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies -- University of Amsterdam. From January 2007 till August 2008 he was a post-doc researcher at Columbia University, New York. Previously, he was a guest researcher at New York University, City University New York, the University of Milan-Bicocca and at the University of Urbino (Italy). He is the associate editor of the Encyclopedia of Urban Studies (2010), the guest editor of a special issue of the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (2009) on mortgage markets, associate editor of TESG, and the book review editor of Rooilijn, a Dutch urbanstudies/planning journal. His main research interest is in the intersection of housing and finance. He has published on redlining, social and financial exclusion, urban policy, gentrification, the privatization of social housing, financialization, and the Anglo-American hegemony in academic research and writing. He is the author of a book on housing and community development in New York City and of a book titled Place, Exclusion and Mortgage Markets. He is also preparing an edited volume titled Subprime Cities: The Political Economy of Mortgage Markets
Manuel Aalbers, een sociaal geograaf, socioloog en planoloog, is als onderzoeker/UD verbonden aan de Afdeling Geografie, Planologie en Internationale Ontwikkelingsstudies van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij was van begin januari 2007 tot augustus 2008 verbonden aan Columbia University in New York. Eerder was hij gastonderzoeker aan New York University, City University New York en de Italiaanse universiteiten van Milaan-Bicocca en Urbino. Hij is een van de redacteuren van de Encyclopedia of Urban Studies (2010), gastredacteur van een themanummer van het International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (2009) over hypotheekmarkten, associate editor van Tijdschrift voor Economische en Sociale Geografie en lid van de redactieraad van tijdschrift Rooilijn en Geografie. Zijn onderzoeksinteresse richt zich vooral op de intersectie van financiën, de gebouwde omgeving en bewoners. Hij heeft gepubliceerd over redlining, sociale en financiële uitsluiting, stedelijk beleid, gentrification, stedelijke vernieuwing, de verkoop van sociale huurwoningen, financialisering en de Anglo-Amerikaanse hegemonie in academisch onderzoek. Hij heeft twee Nederlandstalige boekengeschreven: een over volkshuisvesting en community development in New York en een over redlining in Nederland. Momenteel is hij bezig met de afronding van zijn nieuwe boek Place, Exclusion and Mortgage Markets en met het samenstellen van de bundel Subprime Cities: The Political Economy of Mortgage Markets.
