PhD project Family Background and Residential Choice

From 2006 to 2010, I wrote my PhD dissertation at the Department of Human Geography, Planning and International Development Studies at the University of Amsterdam. The dissertation is titled Family Background and Residential Choice. Using data from the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study and Swedish register data, I examined to what extent the wider family context influences residential choices. The family context includes one's own family or household situation, family background characteristics, residential experiences during childhood and family members outside the household such as parents and siblings. The residential choices that are addressed are the timing of leaving the parental home, home ownership, the choice for a residential environment type, distances between men and women in couples and their parents, and the geographical dispersion of siblings. The research question I addressed is: How are residential choices influenced by the family context, and to what extent does this influence differ between men and women and between couples and singles?

Promotores: prof. dr. Clara H. Mulder and dr. Aslan Zorlu.
