Marjolein ’t Hart (1955) graduated cum laude in Economic and Social History (MA) at the University of Groningen in 1981. Her MA Thesis studied Irish returnee emigrants in the nineteenth century. She held positions at various universities (Groningen, Leiden, Rotterdam, VU University Amsterdam) and in various disciplines (history, sociology, political sciences). In 1989 she obtained her PhD degree in History at the University of Leiden with a thesis on the rise of the fiscal-military state of the Netherlands in the seventeenth century, supervised by Prof. Charles Tilly (New York) and Prof. Wim Blockmans (Leiden). She was a Visiting Scholar at Trinity College Dublin, a Fellow of the New School for Social Research at New York, a Fellow of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies in Wassenaar, and Visiting Professor (Queen Wilhelmina Chair) at Columbia university. She organized a substantial number of (international) conferences; recently, she joined the Executive Committee of the International Economic History Association. For the Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad she participated in the examination of the history departments of the Flemish Universities. She was also member of the editorial board of a number of periodicals, among others of the International Review of Social History, which she chaired. Since 1990 she teaches Economic and Social History at the University of Amsterdam, presently as Associate Professor.

 

Marjolein 't Hart (1955) is sinds 1990 aan de Leerstoelgroep Economische en Sociale Geschiedenis van de Universiteit van Amsterdam verbonden, tegenwoordig als Universitair Hoofddocent. Zij studeerde sociale en economische geschiedenis aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Voor haar doctoraalscriptie over Ierse emigranten in de 19e-20e eeuw verbleef zij een jaar aan het Trinity College in Dublin. Daarna was zij werkzaam als onderzoeksmedewerkster bij sociologie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (project over sociale revoluties) en bij politicologie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden (project over bureaucratisering). Met een Vera List Fellowship bracht zij de jaren 1986-1987 door aan de New School for Social Research in New York. In 1988 werd zij universitair docent in de Economische en Sociale Geschiedenis aan de Vrije Universiteit; in 1989 kwam daar een aanstelling voor maatschappijgeschiedenis (Erasmus Universiteit, Rotterdam) bij. Zij promoveerde in 1989 aan de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden op een proefschrift over staatsvorming in het zeventiende-eeuwse Nederland bij Prof. Dr. W.P.BlockmansenProf. Dr. Charles Tilly. In 1992-1993 was zij Fellow aan het Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies in Wassenaar. Zij organiseerde een reeks (internationale) conferenties, onder meer voor de Stichting Maatschappijgeschiedenis. Sinds kort is zij ook lid van de Executive Committee van de International Economic History Association.  In 2010 vervulde zij de Queen Wilhelmina leerstoel aan Columbia University (New York).
