Biography and research interests
I studied history, philosophy and constitutional law at the universities of Bonn, Göttingen and Paris-Sorbonne. After completing my PhD at Humboldt University Berlin, I was Wissenschaftlicher Assistent at the same institution, visiting scholar at the University of Chicago as well as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds. I joined the University of Amsterdam in September 2011 as Associate Professor of Modern History.
I am currently revising my second book, entitled Individuality and Modernity in Berlin: Self and Society from Weimar to the Wall, for publication with Cambridge University Press in 2013. It stems from a long-term preoccupation with the history of individual and collective identities, of urban modernity, and of twentieth-century Germany in a European context. In this vein, I have also published a first book on elites and nationalism in Germany and France, 1900-1930 and (co-)edited volumes on interpersonal communication in modern Germany, on the theme of ‘crisis’ in the Weimar Republic, and on the relationship between historiography, literature and the arts. Moreover, I have authored a number of articles and book reviews on German history from the turn of the century to the 1950s as well as, to a lesser extent, on twentieth-century France and Europe. In the foreseeable future, I will continue to research and write on twentieth-century Germany, with particular emphasis on the Weimar and Nazi periods. With Mark B. Smith, I am also co-organising a series of workshops on European urban life since 1945 at the University of Leeds. I am the review editor of the journal German History.Publications
