Short biography
Marijke Gnade (1956) is Professor by Special Appointment in the Archaeology of pre-Roman Cultures in Central Italy in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam. She studied Classical Archaeology at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam where she received her doctoral degree in 1984. In 1987 she was appointed assistant professor in Classical Archaeology at the University of Amsterdam . She acquired her PhD degree at this University in 2000 on a case study of the interpretation of archaeological remains as indicators of ethno-cultural identity in ancient Satricum in the post-archaic period.
Research activities
Gnade hasled various field projects in Italy, including ones in Oria and Valesio in Apulia. In 1991, after participating for ten years in the Satricum Research Project, she became director of those Satricum excavations which are now the responsibility of the University of Amsterdam.
She is member of the academic staff of a new research project launched in 2007 at the Amsterdam Archaeological Centre (University of Amsterdam): New Perpectives on Ancient Pottery. The main aim of the project is to embed successfully new methodologies in archaeological pottery research that will increase the quality and quantity of information which can be retrieved from archaeological ceramic assemblages. Proto-historic and historical periods pottery of the Dutch excavation in Italy (Satricum) and Dutch excavations and surveys in Greece (Halos and Zakynthos) - covering the periods from the Bronze Age down to the Roman times - serve as case studies.Satricum Research project

Other activities
At present Marijke Gnade is a member of the working committee for the local council of the province of Latina , which was founded to try and obtain European funding for the conservation of the cultural heritage of the province. She is also the academic consultant for Latina on the subject of its archaeological heritage, and on attempting to get the region opened up for archaeological investigation. Gnade holds various editorial positions, including serving on the editorial board of the Satricum series. She is currently preparing a major exhibition entitled Satricum: Thirty Years of Dutch Excavation which will open shortly in Le Ferriere (Satricum). A book of the same title has appeared in October 2007.
