dr. M.H.E. (Mirjam) Hoijtink - Universiteit van Amsterdam

Introduction

Mirjam Hoijtink (1968), lecturer in the field of Museumstudies (dept. of European Cultural History since 2000) studied archaeology at the VU Amsterdam. Her affinity with archaeological collections in museums, has been worked out in a comparative study on the pioneering years of antiquity museums in Europe, as seen through the eyes of Caspar J.C. Reuvens, first professor in the Archaeology in Leiden,1818. Hoijtink became doctor at the University of Amsterdam 2009 (Promotor Prof.dr. W. den Boer). Research interests are merely related to the period 1780-1840: to the biography of collections, European academic networks, and to the contemporary historiographical opinion on 'Universal History' which sorted its effect on the history of museum collections and exhibitions at that time.

As a lecturer Hoijtink encourages to develop an international museumhistorical view in the field of Museumstudies, also seeking to explain that insightinthe inclusiveness of 'universal' museums in the first half of the 19thcentury can be helpful to develop a vision on globalism and museums today.

Together with Bert van de Roemer she is responsible for the Master Museumstudies.

Exhibiting the Past. Caspar Reuvens and the Museums of Antiquities in Europe 1800-1840, (2012) is available at Brepols Publishers. Currently she works on a research after Ennio Quirino Visconti and the Migration of Classical Culture in Europe around 1800.
