Paradox of Sovereignty; Denaturalization in the Age of Globalization (working title)

My research focuses on immigration policies and denaturalization discourses in the context of European security culture. Here I aim at furthering our understanding of the performative power of the institutionary norms of citizenship and national identity. By questioning the idea of denaturalization and looking at the paradoxical facets of sovereignty from a cultural perspective, I examine the visibility of (de)naturalization practices, their gradual normalization and possible ways of resisting them.

In short, this study speaks about the silenced effects and consequences of the forfeiture of nationality (i.e. denaturalization). While looking at denaturalization law in great details, I analyze juridical political structures and discourses that place migrants in a potentially infinite space of exception.  Specifically, I explore the relationship between law, language and emotions, and discuss the extent to which the hybridity of language translates into an hybridity of the law.

This research project follows on my MA thesis entitled “Diplomatic Practices from the Perspective of Population and Ethical Encounters”. There I problematized systems of recognition and processes of identity formation related to institutional norms instigated by the nation-state. I explored the complex cultural implications of the diplomatic network, while, at the same time, demonstrating where social theory and cultural analysis can help to tackle institutional norms and re-state human encounters at the core of juridical political issues.
