Background
Martin Olsthoorn graduated in 2010 as a sociologist at the University of Amsterdam. During his masters, he focussed predominantly on the link between labour market institutions, employers, and employees. This focus led to a well-received master's thesis on the phenomenon of "Precarious Employment", which won the the price for best master's thesis at the University of Amsterdam's faculty of sociology, 2009/2010. Essentially a concept-measurement review, Martin's thesis systematically brought together a myriad of conceptualisations of precarious employment, which were then integrated into a proposition for a statistical indicator. Currently, this thesis is being rewritten in order to submit it for review in a sociological journal.
Current research
As of January 1st2011, Martin Olsthoorn is active as a PhD-student at the University of Amsterdam, at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), specifically. His research, part of the programme group "Institutions, Inequality, and Internationalisation", headed by Prof. Dr. Herman vd. Werfhorst, will focus on employer drivers in promoting precarious employment arrangements. During this research panel data will be utilized to assess the influences of employer characteristics, institutional change, business cycles and recessions on the prevalence of precarious employment. In order to successfully complete this research, Martin is currently working closely with Prof. Dr. Jelle Visser (AIAS) (promotor), Prof. Dr. Paul de Beer (AIAS) en Dr. Klarita Gerxhani (FMG).
