Why are people creative?

My research is aimed at investigating the effects of functionality on creative behavior. When people have a reason to be creative (i.e. creativity is functional) they should become more creative, irrespective of the type of goal. Both avoidance goals and approach goals (i.e. achieving gains or avoiding losses) should lead to greater creativity, possibly through different routes (persistence versus flexibility).
