2010 - Invited as "eminent scholar" by the Japan Society for the promotion of Science" (JSPS), "Invitational Training Program for Advanced Japanese Research Institutes". Host Institute: Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA)/ Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS).

2007-2008 Fellow of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS, Wassenaar) of the KNAW (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences/ Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen)

Born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 1958. “Kandidaatsexamen” (BA) Spanish Language and Linguistics, 1985 (University of Amsterdam) and MA in the “History of Spanish” and “minors” in Portuguese and Classical Arabic (University of Amsterdam, 1986, “cum laude”).
