Born Dec. 19, 1932 in Uppsala, Sweden.
- Lecturer in Scandinavian Studies, especially Swedish at Harvard University 1957-58.
- Research assistant at the Division for Drama Research, Uppsala Universitet, 1965-69.
- Doctorate in Comparative Literature, especially Drama, at Uppsala Universitet in 1969.
- Professor of Scandinavian Studies at Universiteit van Amsterdam 1969-97.
- Visiting scholar at Yale University 1965-66, at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study 1982-83, at the University of Washington spring 1991, and at the Center for Ibsen Studies, Universitetet i Oslo, fall 1993.
- Organizer of the 8th international Strindberg conference, in Amsterdam, 1986.
- Has lectured widely in Europe and in the United States.
- Awarded the Strindberg prize in 2004.
