Dr. Piet Verhoeven

Personal details

Piet Verhoeven is a researcher at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR). He is also managing director of SWOCC - Foundation for Fundamental Research on Brands and Brand Communication. Both ASCoR and SWOCC are part of the department of Communication Science of the University of Amsterdam.  

His research involves persuasive communication & branding, risk communication & public opinion and organizational communication. His studies into organizations’ stakeholders and issues evolves around the role of science and technology in communication and media. Since 2008 Piet participates in the European Communication Monitor, an international research project of 11 European universities. Part of the project is an annual survey among communication professionals in Europe aiming at following trends in the communication profession and finding structures of communication practices in Europe. Piet has published empirical papers in journals like Public Relations Review, Public Understanding of Science and the International Journal of Strategic Communication. More conceptual and theoretical work is published in the book Public Relations and Social Theory and the Journal of Communication Management 

Piet started a career as scientific researcher following several positions in public relations and corporate communications. As a consultant corporate communications, public affairs and branding at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol he coordinated the strategic rebranding of Schiphol airport from a local airport company into an international brand by the name of Schiphol Group.

He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in communication science at the Graduate School of Communication Science and the College of Communication at the University of Amsterdam. Recent courses are the MA seminar Mass media, organizations and propaganda and the first year BA lecture series Internal and external communication of organizations.
