Research

Zuidhof’s research focuses on the history and philosophy of neoliberalism. He is especially interested in the relation between economics and neoliberalism and its specific European manifestations.

He recently completed a dissertation on the discourse of neoliberalism, titled Imagining Markets: The Discursive Politics of Neoliberalism (2012, Erasmus University Rotterdam, School of History, Culture and Communication). In the thesis, Zuidhof studies the discourse of economics textbooks and the neoliberal discourse of US and Dutch policy think tanks. Revisiting existing theories on neoliberalism, the thesis shows that neoliberalism is best understood as a discursive type of politics that draws on the market metaphor. It argues that neoliberalism is marked by a variety of performances and that these are departing from, and deconstructing existing liberal governmentalities.

Zuidhof’s areas of specialization are: history and philosophy of neoliberalism, European political economy, governmentality (Foucault), rhetoric of economics, history and methodology of economics, poststructuralism and economics, and discourse theory. His areas of interest are: history and theory of European integration, political theory, economic sociology, science studies, and economic sociology.
