PhD Thesis

Since september 2008 I am affiliated with the University of Amsterdam as a PhD student on a thesis entitled Early Arabic Journalism in Europe. Focus lies on magazines and newspapers initiated by Arabs in nineteenth century London and Paris. They found there a favourable climate to engage in journalistic activities, outside the control of the Ottoman censors. Central question is how they perceived their home countries and its inhabitants (the "East"), and their countries of residence and its inhabitants (the "West"). The hypothesis is that the construction of identities in their discourse indeed is influenced by their presence in the West. The question of course is, how exactly?
