 Oratie / Inaugural Lecture: 3 november 2009
De oratie in het kader van de leerstoel hedendaagse muziek zal plaatsvinden op dinsdag 3 november 2009, 16.15 uur in de Aula van de Universiteit Utrecht / The inaugural lecture (in Dutch) will be held on the 3rd of November, 2009, 4:15 PM at Utrecht University. / Titel: "Wat is een luisteraar? Reflectie, interpellatie en dorsaliteit in hedendaagse muziek." / De vraag wat een luisteraar is wordt zelden of nooit gesteld. Toch is het in zijn naam dat muziek op de markt wordt gebracht of met subsidies wordt ondersteund. Ook wordt de waarde en geldigheid van bepaalde compositiesen muzikale genres vastgesteld met verwijzing naar de luisteraar. De moderne gecomponeerde muziek, bijvoorbeeld, wordt in toenemende mate aangesproken op haar ongemakkelijke relatie met luisteraars. In deze oratie wordt de geschiedenis onderzocht van het idee dat muziek iets met het zelf van de luisteraar te maken heeft. Is het wel zo vanzelfsprekend dat wij van muziek eisen dat zij ons aanspreekt? Wat verstaan wij eigenlijk onder een dergelijke aanspraak? Wie of wat zijn wij wanneer wij naar muziek luisteren? Aan de hand van drie krachtige concepten zal worden toegelicht waarom muziek ons telkens weer van onszelf zal redden.

 5 en 6 november 2009: Muziek en Filosofie: Peter SZENDY en Laura ODELLO in Nederland
Op 5 en 6 november komen Peter Szendy, filosoof-musicoloog verbonden aan Université de Paris X Nanterre, en Laura Odello, onder meer de Italiaanse vertaalster van het werk van Derrida, naar Nederland. Zij zullen ieder afzonderlijk, maar ook samen (!) lezingen en presentaties geven. Op 5 november in de middag: Odello over de filosofie en praktijk van het vertalen (Universiteit Utrecht). Op 5 november in de avond: duo-lezing van Szendy en Odello in Spui 25, Amsterdam. Op 6 november "Journée Szendy" colloquium aan de Universiteit Utrecht, met als sprekers John Neubauer, Albert van de Schoot, Jan Hein Hoogstad, Vincent Meelberg en Kiene Brillenburg Wurth.  27 november: NGE middag rond Renée vande Vall's At the Edges of Vision
Op 27 november zal er in Amsterdam een middag (14-17 uur, Binnengasthuis BG5 zaal 2.22) worden gewijd aan hetnieuweboek van Renée van de Vall, At the Edges of Vision: A Phenomenological Aesthetics of Contemporary Spectatorship (Ashgate, 2008). Judith Wambacq (Universiteit van Gent), Jeroen Boomgaard (Universiteit van Amsterdam) en Frans van Peperstraten(Universiteit van Tilburg) zullen op het boek reageren in aanwezigheid van de auteur zelf.  Starting November 20, 2009: Ulysses Lied, Reading Kittler's Musik und Mathematik
In the Fall of 2009 a close reading seminar will start on Friedrich Kittler's Musik und Mathematik (Wilhelm Fink, 2006). Sesssions will take place at the University of Amsterdam. Co-organized with Jan Hein Hoogstad (UvA Literary Studies). The first introductory session takes place on November 20th, followed by a session with guest speaker Piet Gerbrandy on philhellenism (December 4) and a session on music (December 18). In 2010 there will be another three sessions plus a closing event.

 23 en 24 April 2010: Writing Musicology PhD Seminar with CUP's Vicky Cooper
Vanuit de Universiteit Utrecht zijn we bezig om een tweedaags PhD seminar op te zettenvoor muziekonderzoekers in Nederland (en Vlaanderen). Het doel van dit seminar is om in een landelijke sfeer zonder de beperkingen van de klok elkaars werk te lezen en becommentariëren, discussie te voeren, en wijzer te worden door de inbreng van een buitenlandse special guest. Het seminar zal plaatsvinden in het voorjaar van 2010 in het Woodbrookerhuis in Barchem. Het staat open voor PhD studenten en gevorderde research MA studenten. De organisatie is in handen van Sander van Maas, Rutger Helmers en Matjaz Matosec. Het programma is gericht op musicologie als praktijk van schrijven. Als speciale gast zal optreden senior music editor van Cambridge University Press, Vicky Cooper.

 April 2009: The Reinvention of Religious Music: Olivier Messiaen's Breakthrough Toward the Beyond
"Present-day music studies conspicuously evade the question of religion in contemporary music. Although many composers address theissue in their work, as yet there have been few attempts to think through the structure of religiousmusic as we hear it. The work of Olivier Messiaen is well known for its inclusion of religious themes and gestures. On thebasis of a careful analysis of Messiaen’s work, this book argues for a renewal of our thinking about religious music. Starting from an analysis of his 1960s oratorio La Transfiguration de Notre-Seigneur Jésus-Christ, van Maas arranges a moderated dialogue between Messiaen and the music theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar, the phenomenology of revelation of Jean-Luc Marion, the rethinking of religion and technics in Jacques Derrida and Bernard Stiegler, and the Augustinian ruminations of Søren Kierkegaard and Jean-François Lyotard. Ultimately, this confrontation underscores the challenging yet deeply affirmative nature of Messiaen’s music."

 Speaking of Music Conference, 20-21 February 2009, New York
How do we speak of music and its effects? What is the sense and meaning of sound? Although these questions are asked in everyage, the answers are always and obviously provisional, for they say as much about the questioner as they do about the medium of music. In this two-day colloquium, wewish to ask these questions anew, but not becausewe hope to answer them once and for all. Rather, we hope in the first place to discuss the avenues of questioning that might be fruitful at a time marked by the dissolution of boundaries between musics and between disciplines. Second, we hopeto use the question to reflect on our own disciplines, both on their highachievements and on their possible limits.

 Lecture on "Late Style Messiaen": Amsterdam, Dec. 16-17 and Athens, Dec. 19-20
The notion of “late style” has often been used to refer to a period of consummationin an artist’s output in which he or she looks back on previous work in harmony and resolution. Since Theodor Adorno’s and Edward Said’s writings on the topic, the notion also evoked the intransigence, difficulty, and unresolved contradiction occasionally found in such works. In this paper this mode of artisticproduction will be tested against French composer Olivier Messiaen’s “late” musical works, many of which appearto thematize, in a monumental manner, the same eschatologicalthemes found in his earlier work. Is there a late style Messiaen? Would such a thing be possible in the first place?

 10 december 2008: De 100e van Olivier Messiaen
Op de dag waarop de Franse componist Olivier Messiaen 100 jaar zouzijn geworden organiseert Messiaen-onderzoekerSander van Maas in samenwerking met Spui 25 een bijzondere avond. Het programma bestaat uit korte presentaties over onderwerpen die Messiaendierbaar waren. De sprekers zijn religiewetenschapper Rob Pauls (UvA), vogelzang-onderzoeker JelleZuidema (ILLC),musicoloog Erwin Roebroeks (EUR) en synesthesie-onderzoeker Tessa vanLeeuwen (RUN). De avond wordt opgeluisterd met een bijzondere muzikale uitvoering onder leiding van cellist Arturo Muruzabal (solist vanhet Radio Filharmonisch Orkest).  21 November: India and the World: Lecture on Pop and Polytheism
Since the early 1990s pop music has made itsappearance in India. Although certain aspectsof the popular style can be found in both Bollywood soundtracks and contemporary bhangra, according to Peter Kvetko and others hindipop should be regarded as a distinct phenomenon. Thecentral question of thispaper is whathappens with the “secular Protestantism” of pop music once it is introduced into an environment that one could call (but here one should tread carefully) polytheistic.

 "Unfolding the Pocket, Neutralizing the Lyrical: Contrabass Guitarist Anthony Jackson and the Aesthetics of Modernism"
A new article (seeDownload sectionbelow) published in theDutch Journal of Music Theory (Vol. 13, Nr. 3, Nov. 2008). "The American bass guitar player Anthony Jackson is known for his early promotion of the six-string ‘contrabass guitar’. This instrument, which has become more common since the 1990s, has served him to build a bridgebetween seemingly incompatiblemusical worlds. After presenting Jackson as heir to the tradition of the 1960srecording studios, in particular to Motown’s James Jamerson, the article explores the influence he claims to have undergone from the organ works of Olivier Messiaen. Operating in-between the worlds of soul, fusion and classical modernism, it is argued, Anthony Jackson speculates on an aesthetics of exteriority that deconstructs both lyricism and the groove."
