CREATIVE INDUSTRIES RESEARCH @ UvA HUMANITIES

The new program Creative Industries Research at the UvA invites applications from recently graduated M.A.’s who are interested in practice based, ‘hands on’ research and who would like to pursue their career with a PhD project. Simultaneously, we are looking for partners from within the creative industries who would like to host a research project for the duration of 6-9 months.

Requirements for prospective researchers:

(a) M.A. in Humanities or related disciplines (e.g., art or design)

(b) research experience

(c) interest in 'hands-on' and 'practice based' research

(d) ability to work in teams

(e) willingness and ability to work for clients

(f) creativity, resourcefulness, ability to work toward deadlines etc

Requirements for projects

(a) Relevance for the Humanities: The project has as its point of departure a concrete reserach question that falls within the broad area of the humanities, solvable within the research period of 6-9months.

(b) Private component: There must be at least one private partner involved in each project. We expect the private partner to invest in kind in the project (hosting the researcher, practical supervision, etc.).

(c) Sustainability: The project outcome will have a purpose beyond the duration of the project itself. This is to say that it can be valorised as a concrete product or service or at least contribute toward a new product or service.

Background

The Faculty of Humanities of the UvA wishes to collaborate more closely with the creative industries. The Faculty wishes to share its vast resources of knowledge, expertise, and research skills and tools in a wide range of areas such art, design, architecture, history, philosophy, media, music, performance, language and literature with the creative industries. We understand that in order to make our resources available to the emergent field of the creative industries, innovative research formats and methods have to be explored. Value creation within the creative industries tends to be based on new technologies, media, design processes and materials that are reshaping and reconfiguring our everyday environments and our culture at large. A serious engagement with this sector requires more collaborative, distributed, and networked approaches to academic research.

In order to jump start the collaboration between the humanities and the creative industries, we will place a number of so-called 'embedded researchers' with companies and institutions in the creative industries for a period of 6 to 9 months. Over the course this period, the researchers will contribute a research-based deliverable to one of the ongoing projectsin these companies and institutions, and they will develop an academic product, preferably a PhD-proposal.

Our intention with this new program is to develop a mutually beneficial collaboration between the Humanities and the Creative Industries, which proceeds bottom-up and demand driven and may inspire to introduce new ways and new themes of research.

If you are interested in a position as an embedded researcher or would like to participate in the program as a private partner please contact dr. Jan Simons ( J.A.A.Simons@uva.nl ) or dr. Sebastian Olma ( s.olma@uva.nl ).
