SOPHIE BERREBI

Sophie Berrebi is a lecturer in the history and theory of photography at the University of Amsterdam where she teaches the history and theory of contemporary art and cultural analysis.  She is also a curator and critic and her writing has appeared regularly in frieze, Afterall, Metropolis M, and Art and Research, among other publications. Sophie Berrebi is currently completing a book on the role of visual documents in contemporary art, as well as a study on Jean Dubuffet’s complex relations with modernism, for which she received a postdoctoral fellowship from the Getty Foundation.

TEACHING AND THESIS SUPERVISION

Sophie Berrebi welcomes all B.A and M.A students wishing to write their final thesis in English on 20th century art. while a generalist, her specialty areas include  art and photography, contemporary art, globalisation,  Art and Cinema,  contemporary art and aesthetics, Art of thr post-war period in Europe and the United States..

Teaching: in 2011-2012 Sophie Berrebi teaches the following M.A courses: "Doing Contemporary Art" , "Objects of Cultural Analysis" ( with Esther Peeren), and the following B.A course : Photography in Contemporary Art. She is the coordinator of "Benaderingen in the kunstgeschiedenis" and participates in : Visuele Analyse, Paris excursion.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES

Research: Sophie Berrebi is currently completing a study on the role of photographic documents  in contemporary art, provisionally titled Documentary Evidence?. Photography, Documentary and Archive in Contemporary Art.


Her book Jean Dubuffet et les Etats-Unis,  based on mostly unpublished archives from the Fondation Dubuffet in Paris, is due to appear fall 2012. It will be publishedin the series 'Cahiers de la FondationDubuffet" by the Fondation Dubuffet in Paris.

she is also working on an annotated edition of the correspondence between Jean Dubuffet and Pierre Matisse and preparing a book-length study essay on Dubuffet and Modernism
