The Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) is one of the largest institutes of the Faculty of Science. Its approximately 240 scientists and staff members work in 16 research groups that perform excellent research centred on three themes:

  1. Cell & Systems Biology,
  2. Neurosciences, and
  3. Molecular Life Sciences.

The Cognitive & Systems Neuroscience group is seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate for a doctoral position in Systems Neuroscience, under a recently acquired grant which is part of the Human Brain Project. The project will focus on the investigation of neural substrates underlying multisensory integration, using techniques such as high-channel count electrode recordings from sensory cortex, optogenetics and behavior.

Project description

The main objective of the project is to reveal neural mechanisms of audiovisual integration and facilitation, within the context of testing a theoretical framework for understanding the neural basis of perception and consciousness. These neural mechanisms will be probed both using correlative techniques (multi-neuron spike recordings and local field potentials) and interventional approaches (optogenetic inactivation of brain areas). A further component will include data analysis and export to brain simulation platforms. This project will be embedded in collaborations with various European research groups.

Requirements

Applicants should have a Master's degree in experimental neuroscience or a related field, including computer science, biomedical engineering or physics. The candidate preferably has strong programming skills (especially MATLAB), as well as expertise in methods for signal processing, neural data analysis and/or behavioral training. Experience in human or animal electrophysiology, affinity with computational neuroscience, and a certificate for working with animals will be important assets for this position.

Appointment

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 4 years (initial appointment will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it can be extended for a total duration of 4 years) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan, including attendance of courses and (international) meetings, will be drafted. The PhD student is also expected to assist in teaching of undergraduate students.

Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from €2,191in the first year to €2,801 in the last year. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.
