The Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) is one of the largest institutes of the Faculty of Science. Its approximately 240 scientists and staff members work in 16 research groups that perform excellent research centered on three themes:

  1. Cell & Sytems Biology;
  2. Neurosciences, and
  3. Molecular Life Sciences.

The Cognitive & Systems Neuroscience group is seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate for a scientific management position, under a grant which is part of the EU FET Flagship Human Brain Project. The candidate will play an important supportive and proactive role in managing scientific projects, including scientific communication, reporting, organization and quality assurance.

Job description

Recently the University of Amsterdam (UvA) was assigned the task of coordinating and leading the Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience (SCN) Subproject of the EU FET Flagship 'Human Brain Project'. This project is one of the first two Flagships launched by the EU and is unique worldwide in its magnitude, scope and ambition in unravelling brain and mind. In relation to this task, the main functions associated with this position are to support the head of the Cognitive & Systems Neuroscience group in scientific management activities, pertaining to our 18 international partners in the SCN Subproject and in coordination with other subprojects. These activities include the support of scientific leadership and quality control to promote scientific excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration, and to help design optimal strategies for research, innovation, education and outreach. The activities also include coordination and fine-tuning of subproject activities with other members of the Cognitive & Systems Neuroscience group. As such, the candidate will closely collaborate not only with the group head, but also with the administrative team and group staff members.


If you are the research assistant we are looking for, you:

  • hold an MSc or a PhD degree in Experimental or Theoretical Neuroscience. Related fields, including computer science, engineering, mathematics or biophysics, will also be considered;
  • are strongly motivated to pursue a career in support and management of larger scientific projects;
  • are required to have strong organizational and managing skills;
  • are fluent in English.

Experience and affinity with cognition, electrophysiology and systems neuroscience, computer simulations of neural processes and/or neural data analysis are important assets for this position.

The appointment is for 30,4 hours per week and will be on a temporary basis to at least 1 July 2020, although this term can be be extended. The Scientific Coordinator is expected to fulfill some duties in coordinating teaching at BSc and MSc levels and coordinating work of PhD candidates.

The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel and will range from €2,709 up to a maximum of €4,274 (salary scale 10), effective 1 February 2019.

The salary is based on a full-time appointment and depending on qualifications, expertise and on the number of years of professional experience. The total salary includes an additional 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus, under the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.
